Abroad Or Not Abroad

07 Sep

Now that I am looking more actively for a job, it is a question I ask myself everyday. My desires to travel, continue to speak english, and discover new cultures are great, but the hurdles in front of me seems sometimes greater. It does not mean I gave up! I am well-known for doing what I have in mind even if it is not easy.

France has its advantages to offer too and that can’t be neglected; The insurance of a great health cover, great weather in the south or west, 5 weeks of paid holidays, easier access to administration (simply because I am not a foreigner here), and familiarity, I mean I know this country!

However, salaries, in my field, are lower here than in some country such as the UK or the USA. And this ad another question to the quest; How important is the salary? How much ROI do you want from your (postgraduate) studies?

My hobbies being what they are (photo, video, and travel mostly), money does make a difference… but in my priority list the interest in the job and the feeling of accomplishment is still well above. So, it should not be too much of an obstacle.

Also, a great job in France, can be the springboard for a great job abroad in a few years. This would probably make it easier too.

After experiencing working, doing various internships and studying abroad, I know how enriching it can be but also how tricky it can become. Since all my experiences have been so positive it is hard for me to stop thinking about going abroad again. And I am not one to choose the easy way, simply because it is easier.

I will probably start/continue looking for work in 2 to 3 countries, ending up looking toward the whole wild world, and find something decent nearby :) . Hopefully, it will not take too long. Moving back with the family isn’t meant for me. It is fun, but it needs to be kept short.

If you had this dilemma before what did you do? Did you stay cosy at home or let (almost) everything behind, roll up your sleeves and went abroad? How hard was it?
